Classroom Management vs. creating community in the classroom
Key Points.
- Theories of classroom management focus on changing students' behaviour through punishments and rewards. A shortcoming of these theories is that they influence behaviour without influencing the motive behind the behaviour.
- For example, using a reward system to promote altruistic behaviour can be efficient in producing altruistic behaviour, but it does not necessarily encourage the development of altruistic personalities.
- Theories that focus on community building and on motivation have proved to be efficient in preventing/reducing problem behaviour, increasing student engagement, and promoting metacognitive discussions
Practical Recommendations.
Recommendation 1: Develop a growth mindset! The growth mindset allows us to perceive intelligence in students. It also allows us to promote a growth mindset in the classroom.
Quote from video: "She would take his head and raise it up: 'Speak up honey, you're brilliant.' After someone telling you that every day, five days a week, for three or four years, that's in you, that becomes a part of you"
"Sometimes I don't like other grown-ups because they think they know everything. I don't know everything. I can learn all the time" (Marva Collins)
"We have work to do. You can't just sit in a seat and grow smart" (Marva Collins)

Recommendation 2: Think about Self-Determination Theory. We have three basic needs: Autonomy, Relatedness(Belongingness) and Competence
- Create autonomy by giving choices
- Create relatedness by giving responsibilities and by creating a sense of community
- Create competence by providing opportunities for taking risks and experiencing success
Recommendation 3: Create a Democratic Authority
- Develop contracts with students.
- Give students a role in the process of evaluation.
Recommendation 4: Use rewards only for mechanical, repetetive skills
